WP1. Regional development and policy in Europe (M1-15)

Coordinator: University of Bari

Focus and objectives

The focus of this WP is on the effects of macroeconomic changes and public policies on the geography of development in selected European countries (Germany, the UK, Spain, Italy, Greece). The analysis will make use of quantitative techniques. The aim is to gain a comparative understanding of how exogenous, endogenous and policy factors have conditioned regional development trajectories since the 1990s, with particular attention to: a) the effects of the reorganisation of global production chains among and within different countries; b) the territorial polarisation of high-value added activities and employment in few (metropolitan) regions. The analysis (in close relation with WP2) will help position the Southern Italian trajectory in the broader context of Europe.
